Hughes Big Red beat Clark Montessori 56-20 in a Miami Valley Conference game at Withrow High School on Friday, Sept. 18.

The Cougars did not go quietly. Junior wide receiver Jayden Davis scored two touchdowns that gave Clark a 14-12 lead, according to live updates from the Clark Montessori athletics account on X. Davis found the end zone first and added a successful two-point conversion to put Clark up 8-6. He scored again later to make it 14-12.

Hughes erased the deficit and piled on 44 unanswered points to close the game. The final score was confirmed by Sports Illustrated's Ohio scoreboard and the Springfield News-Sun.

The loss dropped Clark to 1-4.

The Cougars opened 2026 with losses to Aiken (18-12), Summit Country Day (17-6) before a 39-0 shutout of Finneytown on Sept. 4 gave first-year head coach Keilan Woods his first victory. Davis has been a consistent playmaker through the uneven start. In the Finneytown win, he caught three passes for 110 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt for another score, according to WCPO. A Cincinnati Enquirer photographer captured him making a one-handed touchdown grab over a Gamble defender in the Montessori Bowl at Stargel Stadium on Sept. 12.

"It's something I've dreamed about since I was a kid! Super happy for these kids, man – they deserve something different!" Woods said in a text message to WCPO after the Sept. 4 Finneytown shutout, describing his first win as head coach.

Woods was named head coach in December 2025 after two seasons as defensive coordinator at Withrow. Athletic director Derek Williams called the 2026 campaign a "New Day" for the Erie Avenue program after the Finneytown win, telling WCPO that Woods has been "a huge bright spot, bringing new life to the program."

Clark travels to Manchester High School in Manchester, Ohio, on Saturday, Sept. 26, with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
