Summit Country Day's boys soccer team defeated Moeller on Monday, Sept. 28, handing the No. 1-ranked Crusaders their second straight loss.
The Silver Knights' win over Moeller, first reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer, adds to what has been a strong fall for the Hyde Park program. The final score was not available.
Moeller held the top spot in the Enquirer's Greater Cincinnati boys soccer power rankings as of Sept. 17. Senior captain and center back Benson Rhoads (No. 18) anchored a defense that had allowed just seven goals through a 5-2-3 start as of Sept. 20, according to the Enquirer's Athlete of the Week ballot published Sept. 21. But the Crusaders have lost two straight. St. Xavier beat them 3-0 in the week ending Sept. 27, and Summit's win Monday made it consecutive defeats for a squad that opened the year among the area's highest-ranked teams.
Summit carried an 8-1-2 record with six consecutive wins into the week of Sept. 21, per the same Athlete of the Week ballot. The Silver Knights' September included a 9-1 win over Cincinnati Country Day and a 5-1 victory against Little Miami in the week ending Sept. 20. Sam Viltro scored two goals in the Little Miami match. Summit also beat Seven Hills on Sept. 10.
The Enquirer's photo gallery from the Moeller game showed Summit forward Austin Fry (No. 10) battling Moeller's Brady Sanders (No. 17). Summit's results between Sept. 21 and the Moeller match have not been confirmed, so the Silver Knights' exact record entering Monday's game is unknown.
The win carries extra weight for a program riding momentum from last season. Cincinnati City Council passed a resolution on May 20 recognizing both the Summit Country Day boys and girls soccer teams for winning the Ohio state championship.
