Luke Kuechly will become the third Greater Cincinnati high school football player enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he is inducted Aug. 8, in Canton, Ohio. He joins a short list that includes Purcell Marian's Roger Staubach and Middletown's Cris Carter.

The ceremony, scheduled for noon at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, puts the 2009 St. Xavier graduate alongside Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Adam Vinatieri and Roger Craig in the Class of 2026.

His father, Tom Kuechly, will present him.

For Hyde Park-area football fans, the local thread runs straight through East Walnut Hills. Staubach graduated from Purcell High School (now Purcell Marian) in 1960, grew up in Silverton and was inducted in 1985. The school opened Staubach Stadium in his honor in the fall of 2023.

"I just got to get up there and let it rip now," Kuechly told WCPO on Thursday, Aug. 6, describing weeks of speech preparation that included figuring out how to touch on everyone from fourth grade through age 28.

Kuechly played linebacker for the Carolina Panthers from 2012 to 2019, earning seven Pro Bowl selections in eight seasons. He won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2012, Defensive Player of the Year in 2013 and was a five-time first-team All-Pro. He helped Carolina reach Super Bowl 50 after the 2015 season.

St. Xavier head coach Steve Specht told WCPO he planned to travel to Canton on Aug. 8, with the football team departing at 6:30 a.m. Saturday to watch the ceremony. Specht said he was thrilled for Kuechly and his family.

Kuechly credited his upbringing and his time at St. Xavier for shaping his career, saying his parents' sacrifices and Specht's coaching taught him how to approach the game with effort, determination and toughness.

The Purcell Marian connection stretches back more than six decades. Staubach won the Heisman Trophy at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1963, served in Vietnam, then led the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowl titles. When the school announced the stadium naming in January 2022, Staubach said his experience at Purcell greatly impacted his life and that he was honored to be part of a project ensuring future generations of Cavaliers are inspired on and off the field.

Carter, the third member of the Greater Cincinnati trio, graduated from Middletown in 1984 and entered the Hall of Fame in 2013.

With Kuechly's enshrinement Saturday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame will grow to 387 members. His next chapter begins when he starts as the No. 1 game analyst for Netflix's NFL coverage this fall.
