A free career workshop at the Oakley Branch Library on Oct. 14 will help job seekers identify and pitch their transferable skills to employers.

The Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library (CHPL) is bringing its fall workforce development series to the Oakley Branch Library with a session called "Discover Your Core Skills & Tell Your Professional Story." The workshop runs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 4033 Gilmore Ave.

Dr. Angie Taylor of Taylor Career Strategies will lead the session. Taylor has provided career coaching to Greater Cincinnati residents for more than a decade, according to CHPL. The workshop focuses on helping job seekers identify transferable skills from past work and present them to employers.

Participants will learn to build a core skills chart and practice explaining how those skills apply to a new role. The event registration page frames the challenge this way: most people can list the jobs they've held, but far fewer can explain the skills they bring to a new employer.

The Oct. 14 session is part of a broader CHPL lineup this fall. Taylor is also scheduled to lead online Transferable Skills Workshops on Sept. 22 and Oct. 20 at 11 a.m., plus an online version of the core skills workshop on Oct. 28 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Other offerings include two classes from Leila Kubesch, a former Ohio Teacher of the Year, author and speaker with more than 20,000 social media followers. Her "Visibility: Get Found Before You Apply" session on Nov. 11 will cover turning a LinkedIn profile into a recruiting tool and using social media to signal expertise.

"I love my Library card … I go there to use its resources, and I come back to offer value," Kubesch said in a CHPL blog post published Sept. 1.

The series begins with a free Employment Job & Resource Fair at the Downtown Main Library on Sept. 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Employers including Amazon, UPS, UC Health, Goodwill and Hard Rock Casino will be on hand, along with community organizations such as Talbert House, Freestore Foodbank and the Hamilton County Office of Reentry.

CHPL also offers Monday Career Essentials drop-in hours every Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Downtown Main Library. No registration is required.
