Forty-four students at Walnut Hills High School earned gold, silver or bronze recognition on the Level 1 National German Exam, the school's student newspaper reported Sept. 10.

The exam, administered by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG), tests reading and listening skills. More than 12,000 students nationwide took the 2026 exam, which was given in the spring.

Scarlett Norris, class of 2031, scored in the gold category. "It was a little difficult, but not too difficult," Norris told The Chatterbox. "I didn't study for it at all."

The Cincinnati Public Schools college-preparatory school sits on Victory Parkway near Hyde Park. The AATG, which has run the exam for 67 years, describes it as a diagnostic tool. The organization said in February that medals would be distributed in March through local chapters.
