Three people suffered serious injuries the evening of Sunday, July 26, when two vehicles collided near the intersection of Gilbert Avenue and Oak Street in Walnut Hills, just west of the Hyde Park border.

The Cincinnati Fire Department said crews received the call at approximately 7:16 p.m. and arrived to find occupants trapped inside at least one of the vehicles.

First responders were able to remove one person quickly with minimal difficulty, according to CFD. A second person required power tools to free. Crews worked for roughly 10 minutes before that victim was successfully extricated.

All three people were transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Their conditions had not been updated as of July 27.

25 first responders on scene

CFD said 25 first responders assisted at the crash site. The Cincinnati Police Department is investigating the cause of the collision, which had not been determined as of July 27. Police have not released details about what led to the crash.

Neither department has identified the victims or provided information about the vehicles involved.

Gilbert Avenue safety project in pipeline

The crash occurred along a stretch of Gilbert Avenue slated for a city-led safety redesign. The Gilbert Avenue Complete Street Project, which would reduce travel lanes and add protected bike lanes along a two-mile segment, is expected to begin construction in late summer 2026, according to the city's project page. A feasibility study published in April 2025 found the corridor's five lanes and 70 feet of roadway width contribute to increased speeds despite carrying only about 9,000 vehicles per day.

Whether Sunday's crash involved speeding or any of the corridor-design factors the project aims to address is unknown.
