A fake video circulating online promises federal property tax breaks for older homeowners. The Ohio Department of Taxation says scammers use it to steal personal information.

The department issued the warning Sept. 14, saying the AI-generated video falsely claims Congress approved tax relief for seniors. It tells viewers to contact their county auditor about a "Senior Homeowner Tax Review Request" or "IRS Form 1098-SR." Neither form exists.

The phone numbers and links in the video connect callers to scammers, not government offices.

"This is an AI-generated video designed to trick seniors into sharing Social Security numbers, banking information or paying fees for services that do not exist," Ohio Tax Commissioner Patricia Harris said. Harris noted the federal government does not oversee Ohio's property tax system.

Hamilton County Auditor Jessica E. Miranda flagged the same video more than a month earlier. Miranda warned homeowners Aug. 10 that her office was fielding calls from residents who had seen it. Auditor offices across the state, including Franklin County, reported a similar surge.

"This form does not exist, and the video is entirely false," Miranda said Aug. 10, when her office first alerted Hamilton County residents. She urged homeowners to report the video as misinformation.

Miranda spokesperson Connor Moreton told Axios Cincinnati that YouTube removed the original video after the office reported it, but other versions are likely still circulating. The department said scammers using AI can mimic government officials and agency logos.

Ohio does offer real property tax relief for older residents through the Homestead Exemption. The program is available to homeowners 65 or older with a gross income below $41,000, excluding Social Security, according to Miranda's office. Qualifying homeowners can apply through the Hamilton County Auditor's Office.

Eligible recipients are also expected to receive a one-time $450 to $500 reduction in 2027, with no separate application required, according to Axios Cincinnati.

The Department of Taxation urged residents to verify any tax-related claims with their county auditor before sharing personal information. Homeowners can reach the Hamilton County Auditor's Office at hcauditor.org.
